Greener Grasses

from Simple Complex by Graven

/
  • Record/Vinyl + Digital Album

Coming in with a loud fuzzy bang for my 15th release, it's "Simple Complex". This album sort of constitutes my mind for the past few years and all of the major traumas and changes I've gone through on my soul-rebuilding journey towards self-love. This record also represents the idea that so many things are seemingly simple but very complex in nature, and the 8 songs speak to those themes: Relationships, Self-Love, Music, The Past, Letting Go, Accepting Pain, Stepping Into Who You Are, Death and Memory. It's sonically wilder than anything I've done, and that was largely due to Charles Austin running wild on every track and playing several instruments. The songs are also geared towards my musical heroes in composition and style. It was mixed by Joel Plaskett and recorded in his very own Fang Studios in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia over 6 days. I hope you enjoy hearing it as much as I enjoyed making it.

Matty McKechnie: songwriting, vocals, acoustic guitars, electric guitar, bass, synth
Charles Austin: guitars, omnichord, fuzz bass, effect guidance, sonic wizardry
Kevin Corbett: pedal steel, electric guitar, bass
    Jeff Gay: piano, synth
    Jordan Murphy: drums, percussion
Joel Plaskett: guitar leads on "Exploded"
Engineered by Thomas Stajcer and Alex Burris
    Mixed by Joel Plaskett
    Mastered by Philip Shaw Bova
With inspiration from The New Band (Gideon Yellin, Rehuel Ernest, Dan Marshall and Tom Thompson)

about

Pals - Simple Complex comes out Feb 25 but you can preorder it NOW. So please do! It's been a weird two years for musicians. Here's the first track: Greener Grasses. It's a fuzzy melodic Pinkerton-esque banger about the strange world of relationships. Enjoy!

lyrics

Well I do believe the odds of the high romantic gods
Are stacked up against my old unlucky soul
I have lived my 9 lives 81 gazillion times
And yet I anti-up and let the old dice roll

But I'm still a sucker for the rush

Well I've got too many words - my thoughts are hummingbirds
Momentarily ethereal and gone
And the voice inside my head speaks what Holden Caulfield said
"Everybody's phony - but I'm the biggest one"

And I'm still hoping for a flush

And I don't know what I want
I'm here I'm there I'm gone
On the run from the hunt for the trophy shelf
No matter how good my view, I am always somewhere else

And I don't know what I want
I'm here I'm there I'm gone
On the run from the hunt for the trophy shelf
No matter how good my view, I am always somewhere else

Well I do believe the odds of the matchmaking gods
Are a thousand to one against my hand
But I'll live in the world between - in a meadow in my dream
Where the grass is always greener than where I am

But I'm still hoping for a flush

And I don't know what I want
I'm here I'm there I'm gone
On the run from the hunt for the trophy shelf
No matter how good my view, I am always somewhere else
